'I make all my choices'

Talking about her passion for music she says, “I have been brought up in an artistic environment and I was always surrounded by creativity so the love for music was a natural progression.” Shruti, who is also in the process of making an album, has been influenced by the Beatles, RB Burman, Illayaraja, AR Rahman, which oddly represents a healthy balance of east meets west trends. She has also composed music for the Tamil version of the movie ‘A Wednesday’, ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’, starring Kamal Haasan.

Musical Journey

Shruti who started training in Hindustani Classical music at the age of five went to the Musicians Institute in California for a formal education in western music. She made her debut as a singer in ‘Chachi 420’, which was incidentally directed by her father Kamal Hassan.

“I feel music has no boundaries and it just has different accents whether it is classical, rock or Bollywood. Modern musicians like Amit Trivedi, AR Rahman jump genres dramatically and effortlessly. I am also a huge fan of Madonna who is an amazing performer. I feel she will be rocking even when she hits 80,” gushes Shruti as she describes her own pop rock band, which touches different genres like pop, blues and soul. She adds, “I just love electric distortion, I get excited every time it kicks into a song.”
