‘Nothing gets Rahman worked up’

Natalie Di Luccio has recorded two songs with AR Rahman for the Ranbir Kapoor starrer, Rockstar. The Italian-Canadian singer, who recently concluded a multi-city tour with the music maestro in India, says, “It was during the tour, after a rehearsal, when Rahman heard me improvise some of his songs using my classical voice. He liked it and the same night, I was called to his studio to record a song for him.”

The singer was earlier found on the YouTube by Rahman’s management, who saw her rendition of Kahin toh… She was invited to join him on tour: “I learnt a lot because everyone on the tour came from different schools of music, languages, traditions, and yet we got along well.”

RahmanNatalie admits that Rahman has taught her to remain calm and peaceful. She recalls, “Nothing gets him worked up. When the Nagpur show was cut short by the police when we went past the 10 pm deadline, he went on stage and said “Sorry everybody, that’s the end.” He was so polite and calm. One of the best things I’ve learnt from him is how not to let other’s opinion affect you. You will never be able to please everybody, so just do your best.”

The singer says seeing him work in the studio inspired her, adding, “Rahman is a true musician who follows his instincts and loves to experiment. I was amazed to see how much he knew of other genres— I could name any opera singer or musical, and he knew it.”
